Do you love makeup just as I do, but avoid wearing makeup most of the time because of your oily skin?
Then, I can understand how disappointing it is.
Excessive oil on the skin can melt your makeup. Sometimes it also gives a cakey & greasy look which looks really bad!
Makeup products contain some oil in them and hence your skin tends to become oily when you wear makeup. Unfortunately, oily skin people experience this problem more as compared to dry or combination type. So, you can’t let go of this situation easily.
Don't worry, I am here to help. In this article I am sharing some makeup tips for oily skin. So let's find out - How to keep your makeup from getting oily?
Daily Makeup Routine For Oily Skin
First, you should follow the right skincare routine for your oily skin. If you are following a good skincare routine according to your skin type, it’s great. But, if you are not taking good care of your oily skin, then click here and know your best skin care routine for oily skin. So, here are some simple yet effective tips for daily makeup for oily skin -
1. Cleanse Your Face With Clean Water
After waking up in the morning, cleanse your face with a mild cleanser and massage for 2 minutes. Wash your face with plain water and then cleanse again with micellar water.
You can use Bioderma Sensibio H2O Soothing Micellar Cleansing Water, which is specially made for oily acne-prone skin.
2. Hydrate Your Skin
Keeping your skin hydrated all the time is a must. Use toner, serum, moisturizer according to your oily skin type. Read my post for the best face care products for oily skin. After cleansing, follow the skincare routine - use a toner, serum, and moisturizer to keep your skin and makeup hydrated.
3. Lip And Lid Balming
As hydrating our skin is a must then why ignore lip and eyelid. They also need a good balm and massage.
Now, back to the eyelid! Please, don’t use eye cream for eyelid balming. Use the right eyelid balm and leave it on until it gets blended.
You can give this balm a try: Queen Bee Naturals Best Eye Balm Peeper Keeper, it's good.
4. Don’t Ignore Primer
People think that moisturizer and primer do the same thing. NO! Because, moisturizer just hydrates your skin but a good primer fills your open pores and fades the blemishes.
Primer works as a base that helps give a flawless look to your makeup.
My favorite primer of all time is Smashbox Photo Finish Oil Free Foundation Primer. You can also go for other brands such as Mac Prep + Prime Fix, Colorbar New Perfect Match Primer, they are also good and give a long-lasting effect.
5. Setting Spray
Use the setting spray before applying any makeup product as a makeup base for foundation.
6. Use Foundation
If you have oily skin, it's better to avoid the radiant foundations that can give you a greasy look. Always try to buy a foundation that has a matte finish to avoid excessive oil presence.
If you are using a matte foundation then you will get a non-greasy look. Always use a beauty blender to dab the foundation over skin and dab until it gets a matte look.
7. Conceal Your Eyes
If you have bright eyes and no dark circles, then just use a good eye cream but if you have dark circles too, then, the eye concealing step plays a major role in your overall makeup.
First, use a good eye cream like StBotanica Pure Radiance Under Eye Cream.
Use a concealer and dab it with the help of a beauty blender or makeup brush.
8. Use Loose Powder
Once you conceal your eyes, it’s time to bake them.
You can use Makeup Revolution Luxury Banana Powder - it will give your face and eyes a bright and non-greasy look. This will also bake your makeup and help you wear it for a long time.
9. Compact Powder
Use compact matte finish powder to avoid oil on the face. You can use the M.A.C Mineralize Compact Powder , it really gives a natural look. If you want a natural look you can skip foundation and just use compact powder after using a primer. Trust me, it will give you a matte and natural look. If you are going to a party, use foundation and then compact.
10. Waterproof Eye Makeup
Use waterproof makeup because excess oil can melt down eye makeup. Be it eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow, or eyebrow pencil, try to use waterproof makeup products.
11. Don’t Over Do
For daily makeup, don't use too much eye shadow, blush, contouring, or highlighter. If it's daily office makeup, you can ignore oil-based products. If you are going to a party then try to choose matte finish products instead of using oil-based ones.
12. Setting Spray (Again)
Once, your makeup is done you can use a setting spray to set the makeup all day. It also helps to give you a dewy look without leading to oiliness. It gives you shine and sets your makeup for long.
When we talk about the setting spray then MAC Prep+Primer is the one that can be used for primer and setting spray both. This is the number one choice for most makeup artists. Smashbox Photo Finish Setting Spray

After 2-3 hours of wearing makeup, you may have sweating that determines oil presence. This time you need to use blotting sheets. Always keep these sheets in your makeup bag and use them if you sweat or feel oiliness on the face.

Use some ice before applying anything and after cleansing. Ice will keep your skin hydrated and will give your makeup a nice look.
Also, If you have slept late at night and want to hide the tiredness of your eyes with makeup, then keep some tea bags in the freezer for some time and then apply them on your eyes for 15 minutes. This will make your eyes shine and it also removes the excessive oil. Then use toner, serum, moisturizer step by step as given above.
